Strengths Quest

Chris Freeman

Ideation

You are fascinated by ideas. What is an idea? An idea is a concept, the best explanation of the most events. You are delighted when you discover beneath the complex surface an elegantly simple concept to explain why things are the way they are. An idea is a connection. Yours is the kind of mind that is always looking for connections, and so you are intrigued when seemingly disparate phenomena can be linked by an obscure connection. An idea is a new perspective on familiar challenges. You revel in taking the world we all know and turning it around so we can view it from a strange but strangely enlightening angle. You love all these ideas
because they are profound, because they are novel, because they are clarifying, because they are contrary, because they are bizarre. For all these reasons you derive a jolt of energy whenever a new idea occurs to you. Others may label you creative or original or conceptual or even smart. Perhaps you are all of these. Who can be sure? What you are sure of is that ideas are thrilling. And on most days this is enough.

Strategic

The Strategic theme enables you to sort through the clutter and find the best route. It is not a skill that can be taught. It is a distinct way of thinking, a special perspective on the world at large. This perspective allows you to see patterns where others simply see complexity. Mindful of these patterns, you play out alternative scenarios, always asking, "What if this happened? Okay, well what if this happened?" This recurring question helps you see around the next corner. There you can evaluate accurately the potential obstacles. Guided by where you see each path leading, you start to make selections. You discard the paths that lead nowhere. You discard the paths that lead straight into resistance. You discard the paths that lead into a fog of confusion. You cull and make selections until you arrive at the chosen path-your strategy. Armed with your strategy, you strike forward. This is your Strategic theme at work: "What if?" Select. Strike.

Command

Command leads you to take charge. Unlike some people, you feel no discomfort with imposing your views on others. On the contrary, once your opinion is formed, you need to share it with others. Once your goal is set, you feel restless until you have aligned others with you. You are not frightened by confrontation; rather, you know that confrontation is the first step toward resolution. Whereas others may avoid facing up to life's unpleasantness, you feel compelled to present the facts or the truth, no matter how unpleasant it may be. You need things to be clear between people and challenge them to be clear-eyed and honest. You push them to take risks. You may even intimidate them. And while some may resent this, labeling you opinionated, they often willingly hand you the reins. People are drawn toward those who take a stance and ask them to move in a certain direction. Therefore, people will be drawn to you. You have presence. You have Command.

Input

You are inquisitive. You collect things. You might collect information-words, facts, books, and quotations-or you might collect tangible objects such as butterflies, baseball cards, porcelain dolls, or sepia photographs. Whatever you collect, you collect it because it interests you. And yours is the kind of mind that finds so many things interesting. The world is exciting precisely because of its infinite variety and complexity. If you read a great deal, it is not necessarily to refine your theories but, rather, to add more information to your archives. If you like to travel, it is because each new location offers novel artifacts and facts. These can be acquired and then stored away. Why are they worth storing? At the time of storing it is often hard to say exactly when or why you might need them, but who knows when they might become useful? With all those possible uses in mind, you really don't feel comfortable throwing anything away. So you keep acquiring and compiling and filing stuff away. It's interesting. It keeps your mind fresh. And perhaps one day some of it will prove valuable.

Activator

"When can we start?" This is a recurring question in your life. You are impatient for action. You may concede that analysis has its uses or that debate and discussion can occasionally yield some valuable insights, but deep down you know that only action is real. Only action can make things happen. Only action leads to performance. Once a decision is made, you cannot not act. Others may worry that "there are still some things we don't know," but this doesn't seem to slow you. If the decision has been made to go across town, you know that the fastest way to get there is to go stoplight to stoplight. You are not going to sit around waiting until all the lights have turned green. Besides, in your view, action and thinking are not opposites. In fact, guided by your Activator theme, you believe that action is the best device for learning. You make a decision, you take action, you look at the result, and you learn. This learning informs your next action and your next. How can you grow if you have nothing to react to? Well, you believe you can't. You must put yourself out there. You must take the next step. It is the only way to keep your thinking fresh and informed. The bottom line is this: You know you will be judged not by what you say, not by what you think, but by what you get done. This does not frighten you. It pleases you.

Command trait for the WIN.

So, instead of working on the two papers I have due tomorrow, I've been doing two things that have proven to be much more rewarding:

I've been reading this comic, called Dresden Codak. It gets pretty heady sometimes, what with all the quantum physics and philosophy references. Thats ok though, because both of those things are pretty awesome.

Also, I've been listening to the Mountain Goats, a band whose stuff I've had on my computer for a while, but I only recently started getting into them. Think Bright Eyes, but without all the shittiness. And yes, some of you will say "But Chris, how can you criticize Bright Eyes when you wear a Bright Eyes shirt on a regular basis?" To that I would respond by saying that I used to like Bright Eyes a lot (oh high school...) and got the shirt then, but now I still have it, and really like the design on the shirt, so I continue to wear it. I would also respond by telling you to suck a dick.

So, birthday was yesterday, and it was amazing. I'm going to start this whole thing off with a simple declaration that had Vanessa not been there, the day wouldn't have gone nearly as wonderfully as it did, nor would it have taken on as much significance as it did. In my family, birthdays really are not a big deal at all. Its basically (for us) just a day to get presents because you were born that day, and there isn't really much else to it.

Case in point: For my birthday present from my parents, I told my mom what I wanted a month ago. Two days ago she asked if she could just put money into my bank account and I could go buy it myself. I said sure, no problem. On the actual day of my birthday? I went to work, went straight to Vanessa's after, hung out there till late, went home, slept. Hardly saw my parents. Not because I was just ignorning them, but because they had already made plans for that night, so I did too. Now to many of you, I'm sure this sounds quite sad, but rest assured, for both me and my parents, its pretty standard practice.

Now, back to why Vanessa played such a huge role in this birthday being an exception. First of all, the girl just plain loves me to death (and i love her just as much back), so being showered with attention by the person you love is guaranteed to start things off on a good note. However, the real "eye-opener" was in (one of) the cards she gave me, in which she wrote that a birthday was a day for everyone who loves you to celebrate the fact that you exist, that you are THERE for them to love you, and that you are a part of their lives. I've always felt awkward about birthdays, because I feel like people are congratulating me for something I didn't do, but rather just...happened to me ("Hey! Way to go on being born and following that with 20 years of life!). Going around saying "Thank You" all day for something you really aren't responsible for is always a disconcerting experience (for me, at least). Contrarily, the idea of spending the day with people who are instead saying "Shit, you were born today, and if that hadn't happened, you wouldn't be in my life right now, and that would be awful, I'm so glad you're here" sounds like something I could certainly support.

So, how did I spend my birthday? Not doing a whole lot actually, and I liked it that way. I had work from 8-1 where people regaled me with "happy birthdays!" as well as "you bastard you're leaving us to go back to school!". I got pizza, and cupcakes, and it was all very nice. Then I went to Vanessa's, where she had a whole scheme planned out. First, a card, a simple "Happy Birthday, Love Vanessa" kind of thing, and some DVDs. Then carrot cake (my favorite), followed by "the second part" of my present. The proverbial mystery carrot that Vanessa has been dangling in front of my face for weeks now. BUT, not before I opened another card, this one sweeter, longer, with a heartelt note filling up the blank side of the card, ending in the words "Look under my dresser," which I promptly did.

Where I found THIS: on vinyl.

Vanessa and I had gone to Austin earlier in the summer, and I saw this at a record store we were at, and wanted it desperately, but had already bought enough stuff to break the bank, so I had to go without. Needless to say, it was the best present I got this year, and one of the most thoughtful ones I've ever gotten. Thank you dear.

Now, on to the "booty":

and finally, this:
will be arriving in the mail soon from Mr. Monk himself, whose phone call happened to be the second best part of my birthday. <3 sqlz, def.

I'm moving back to Sherman on Thursday, which is becoming more and more bittersweet the closer I am to it, but I look forward to seeing some more familiar faces.

-free$
