Grad School
Nov. 12th, 2007 | 01:04 am
Been working on grad school apps for a while now, they're pretty shitty but I'm sure it'll work out.
My girlfriend and I have been doing well, been together for over 2 years now, and I'm really excited about that.
Not much has been going on lately, but I guess that's a good thing, just trying to get through my senior year.
Hope everyone is doing okay.

Chris Freeman
Ideation
You are fascinated by ideas. What is an idea? An idea is a concept, the best explanation of the most events. You are delighted when you discover beneath the complex surface an elegantly simple concept to explain why things are the way they are. An idea is a connection. Yours is the kind of mind that is always looking for connections, and so you are intrigued when seemingly disparate phenomena can be linked by an obscure connection. An idea is a new perspective on familiar challenges. You revel in taking the world we all know and turning it around so we can view it from a strange but strangely enlightening angle. You love all these ideas
because they are profound, because they are novel, because they are clarifying, because they are contrary, because they are bizarre. For all these reasons you derive a jolt of energy whenever a new idea occurs to you. Others may label you creative or original or conceptual or even smart. Perhaps you are all of these. Who can be sure? What you are sure of is that ideas are thrilling. And on most days this is enough.
Strategic
The Strategic theme enables you to sort through the clutter and find the best route. It is not a skill that can be taught. It is a distinct way of thinking, a special perspective on the world at large. This perspective allows you to see patterns where others simply see complexity. Mindful of these patterns, you play out alternative scenarios, always asking, "What if this happened? Okay, well what if this happened?" This recurring question helps you see around the next corner. There you can evaluate accurately the potential obstacles. Guided by where you see each path leading, you start to make selections. You discard the paths that lead nowhere. You discard the paths that lead straight into resistance. You discard the paths that lead into a fog of confusion. You cull and make selections until you arrive at the chosen path-your strategy. Armed with your strategy, you strike forward. This is your Strategic theme at work: "What if?" Select. Strike.
Command
Command leads you to take charge. Unlike some people, you feel no discomfort with imposing your views on others. On the contrary, once your opinion is formed, you need to share it with others. Once your goal is set, you feel restless until you have aligned others with you. You are not frightened by confrontation; rather, you know that confrontation is the first step toward resolution. Whereas others may avoid facing up to life's unpleasantness, you feel compelled to present the facts or the truth, no matter how unpleasant it may be. You need things to be clear between people and challenge them to be clear-eyed and honest. You push them to take risks. You may even intimidate them. And while some may resent this, labeling you opinionated, they often willingly hand you the reins. People are drawn toward those who take a stance and ask them to move in a certain direction. Therefore, people will be drawn to you. You have presence. You have Command.
Input
You are inquisitive. You collect things. You might collect information-words, facts, books, and quotations-or you might collect tangible objects such as butterflies, baseball cards, porcelain dolls, or sepia photographs. Whatever you collect, you collect it because it interests you. And yours is the kind of mind that finds so many things interesting. The world is exciting precisely because of its infinite variety and complexity. If you read a great deal, it is not necessarily to refine your theories but, rather, to add more information to your archives. If you like to travel, it is because each new location offers novel artifacts and facts. These can be acquired and then stored away. Why are they worth storing? At the time of storing it is often hard to say exactly when or why you might need them, but who knows when they might become useful? With all those possible uses in mind, you really don't feel comfortable throwing anything away. So you keep acquiring and compiling and filing stuff away. It's interesting. It keeps your mind fresh. And perhaps one day some of it will prove valuable.
Activator
"When can we start?" This is a recurring question in your life. You are impatient for action. You may concede that analysis has its uses or that debate and discussion can occasionally yield some valuable insights, but deep down you know that only action is real. Only action can make things happen. Only action leads to performance. Once a decision is made, you cannot not act. Others may worry that "there are still some things we don't know," but this doesn't seem to slow you. If the decision has been made to go across town, you know that the fastest way to get there is to go stoplight to stoplight. You are not going to sit around waiting until all the lights have turned green. Besides, in your view, action and thinking are not opposites. In fact, guided by your Activator theme, you believe that action is the best device for learning. You make a decision, you take action, you look at the result, and you learn. This learning informs your next action and your next. How can you grow if you have nothing to react to? Well, you believe you can't. You must put yourself out there. You must take the next step. It is the only way to keep your thinking fresh and informed. The bottom line is this: You know you will be judged not by what you say, not by what you think, but by what you get done. This does not frighten you. It pleases you.
Command trait for the WIN.

So, instead of working on the two papers I have due tomorrow, I've been doing two things that have proven to be much more rewarding:
I've been reading this comic, called Dresden Codak. It gets pretty heady sometimes, what with all the quantum physics and philosophy references. Thats ok though, because both of those things are pretty awesome.
Also, I've been listening to the Mountain Goats, a band whose stuff I've had on my computer for a while, but I only recently started getting into them. Think Bright Eyes, but without all the shittiness. And yes, some of you will say "But Chris, how can you criticize Bright Eyes when you wear a Bright Eyes shirt on a regular basis?" To that I would respond by saying that I used to like Bright Eyes a lot (oh high school...) and got the shirt then, but now I still have it, and really like the design on the shirt, so I continue to wear it. I would also respond by telling you to suck a dick.

Sexual Assault Jokes?
This kind of thing should happen more often.

Scientists: Photos suggest recent water on Mars - CNN.com:
I really want someone to find life on Mars, if for no other reason than to see what the religious right does with it. I'm not even certain they'd condemn it, but I think it'd force a lot of people to reconsider their views, as well as take a second look at the authority of the Bible as the literal word of God.
I guess what I'm saying is: Aliens plzplzplzplzplzplzplzplzplzplz.

Jan Term
Dec. 6th, 2006 | 01:09 pm
So, its looking to be the best January ever, so far my plans include:
Paris
Normandy
A number of castles in between those two places
Provence
Nice
Monaco
Cannes
Marseilles
and Italy.
Alas, the life of a liberal arts student is surely one of misery (read: awesome stuff).

Harpal posted this a while ago, but I saw it again today and couldn't resist posting it here too:

Also, I will be in town during the month of December, and will probably be bored some of the time, so some of you should hang out with me (that means you Harpal)but don't ask me to do anything for New Year's Eve because I am leaving for France on New Year's Day and will be doing plenty of drinking on the plane.
Finally, are there any good shows in December?

It's sad that people believe this
I mean, fine, ok, everyone wants to have an orgasm at the same time...go for it, but if you think a global orgasm is going to somehow affect the foreign policy of this or any country...you've got another thing coming.
In other news, finals start in two days, and I really just want this semester to be over.
